Synthesize and Communicate

As a leadership major we’ve been taught over and time again how important communication is. Communication is important in almost every aspect when attempting to achieve a common goal with a group of people. Each goal and vision needs to be communication thoroughly and efficiently. Lead110 was an introduction into the electronic communication format.

Looking back at this excerpt from my e-portfolio truly shows how far I have become. My grammar is awful; my vision is vague with no enthusiasm or passion. Part of communicating as a leader is to convey your goal but also expressing the passion for the vision or goal. With world today is transitioning to technology faster each day it may make it difficult to convey any message with enthusiasm over the Internet. Becoming a great leader requires you to go above and beyond with advancing your skills to the best capacity. One of the struggles we had with capstone this past semester was the ability to motivate others to be more involved with the work. I had first on hand experience working with the high school students, which motivated me to be the best example for them. Instead of addressing the issue late into the semester myself or someone else could have expressed the time commit to this project and how we needed everyone to be involved, while being motivated to put on a great conference.

Constructive Feedback
No person likes to hear that they have done poorly on a group assignment as both a follower and a leader. As a college student it’s even harder to give constructive feedback to your peers because we are all trying to make relationships as well. Each leadership class you work with a group at least once in the semester and still to this day I have trouble giving constructive feedback to my peers. Over the course of the past four years I have been taught how to give constructive feedback, but for me personally I struggle with. I’ve always been the type of person to avoid conflict, I don’t enjoy and don’t like to be apart of it either. On the other hand I do okay with confrontation, I take constructive feedback well and take into consideration what was said to further my talents. In LEAD101 I had a semester long group project with some of my friends. Since I choose to be with my friends I thought the making the magazine would be fun and I wouldn’t have to worry about any doing the work. Boy was I wrong. A group member of mine slacked off so much myself and another group member ended up doing all his work. I was furious with the fact that our friend would take advantage of this opportunity to work together, while he knew that I would cover for him. Although he barely did any work, I take the blame for his slack. I never once confronted him about the issue and I even gave him an okay evaluation just because he was my friend. I did take this as a learning experience. I told myself I would not work with anymore of my close friends in projects. I also learned to confront people constructively to ensure that each member is doing their part.
