Analytics of Leadership & Followership

Freshman year of college I came in as an exercise science major. I took biology, chemistry, and math all my first semester. Talk about bad decisions right? It wasn’t until the end of my sophomore year I decided to switch into the leadership major, not really knowing what to expect. If I could go back and knock some sense into my freshman head I would have chosen this major so much sooner. As a leadership major I have grown to have more confidence, creativity, and intuition. Through the capstone experience I’ve been able to embody these traits into my work. I wasn’t sure how capstone was going to go at first but I help myself to a high standard of commitment and pushing myself to see how far I could go. In my pre evaluation I talked about seeing what I was truly capable of, and capstone did it for me. Although there were definitely negative aspects to it, I’ve more than I could ever known. When we lacked commitment and motivation I was able to express my frustrations to the class in a conductive way. I learned how to channel my inner stress into working harder but by also trying to still include others in the process. I’ve built relationships throughout this process and bettered my communication skills as being the liaison from my class to the high school students. Capstone taught me how to take instruction from my peers. Most importantly capstone taught me how to truly be myself in front of others. During the opening ceremonies I was terrified of doing a dance not only in front of the middle school students but more importantly in front of my classmates. No one likes to be judge or laughed at in any situation. The first time I dance I could feel my face getting red. Than I would watch the high school students just have so much fun with it and in a sense be free. Their attitude inspired me to be myself. No person knows you better than yourself and your capabilities. To a certain extend I knew what I was capable but capstone allowed me to utilize what I knew about myself and put them into a real life experience.

Leadership Behaviors

Over the course of my life I’ve been lucky enough to travel across the world. Going into my senior year of high school I took a ten-day trip to Piura, Peru as a service trip. Parts of Peru are recorded as third world countries, which I was exposed to. Piura is a little town a couple hours outside of Lima, where the people live in huts and sleep on sand. Although these people have little to almost nothing they are some of the happiest people I had the pleasure of meeting. I experienced a similar situation this past winter when I was in Thailand and Laos. Laos especially is years and years behind in the evolutionary of the world. Just like the Peruvians, even with little to nothing I never saw anything but a smile on these people faces. Many travelers that go into these third world countries think that they need so much help, which they definitely do, but they forget the joys of life. Each part of the world is encrypted with a different culture that has been past on from generation to generation. As the world advances today leaders everywhere are adjusting their behaviors to fit the needs of the people. Leadership and followership skills are underrated with the youth of today. Our capstone gave us an opportunity to not only coach high school students and work with them in a conference, but to help shape young minds of middle school students with leadership qualities. By teaching children in middle school leadership qualities and positive follower traits it gives them the opportunity to learn to effectively communicate and build relationships with others. When I was interacting with the middle school students, they were so energetic and bright during each activity. I was truly amazed of how great they were. Capstone made me realize how influential any person can be no matter how old. Every day each community is changing with needs, with these changes leadership behaviors have to convert as well. Leaders need to have the flexibility in themselves to merge with their people in every aspect to be successful.
